Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia and is the technical term for an enlarged prostate gland. This occurs normally in men over the age of 40. Common symptoms of BPH include:
- Urgency in urination
- More frequent urination
- Incomplete bladder emptying
- Intermittency
- Frequently waking up at night to urinate (Nocturia)
Dr. Freedman offers Prostiva RF as a minimally invasive of correcting many of the symptoms associate with an enlarged prostate. In many cases, the procedure is an effective alternative to life-long daily medication. It is performed in the office under local anesthesia as a one-time treatment. Patients are able to return to many of their normal activities within 24-48 hours. Prostiva is covered by Medicare as well as private insurance. Prostiva RF is a recommended treatment by the American Urologic Association Guidelines on management of BPH
In patients who have more advanced obstruction of the bladder outlet, greenlight laser therapy and the "button procedure" (resection in saline) are performed. These are typically performed as outpatient procedures and most patients notice an improvement in their lower urinary tract symptoms relatively quickly.
UroLift® System for BPH
Dr. Freedman also uses the the UroLift® System, a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of BPH. The UroLift® System is an alternative to drug therapy or more invasive surgery. The UroLift System is a straightforward procedure that utilizes tiny implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra. There is no cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue. The goal is to relieve you of bothersome urinary symptoms so you can get back to your life and resume daily activities. Dr. Freedman has been treating men with BPH for over 30 years.
